The Brick Breaker Game Strategy That Maximizes Your High Score

February 22, 2010 by Pierre

The strategy to “beating” BlackBerry’s Brick Breaker game is this: just survive. Don’t worry about your score. Play conservatively until you’ve gone through all 34 levels — twice.

Why? Well, when you make it past all 34 levels, you start over on level 1 again, except the ball moves faster. But if you make it past all 34 levels twice, the ball moves slowly all the time. The game becomes much easier — permanently.

I call this point the Turn. Once you get past the Turn, you can run up your score and your number of lives as high as you like. In fact it doesn’t take any more skill to get a high score of 500,000 than of 50,000 — once you’ve gotten past the Turn, it’s just a question of how much time you want to spend playing and racking up points and lives.

Play Conservatively

Don’t be a hero, OK? Hit the ball with the center of your paddle, as opposed to the edges, whenever possible. Shots taken off the edge are more difficult to control, because they carom around the board at sharp angles.

Stay focused on the ball. Don’t lunge after falling capsules. Grab capsules only when you can reach them easily, and even then only when you’re sure they will help your cause.

Play sitting down. Hold the Blackberry with two hands. Don’t play in a bouncy train or car. Don’t play while talking to someone or after drinking 27 beers. And so on.

Remember: survival is the key to success. Play it safe. Once you get past the Turn, the game becomes much easier. Once you reach that point, you can play aggressively and rack up points without much effort. Until then, be careful.

Watch the Ball Speed

You must pay attention to BrickBreaker’s ball speed changes. There are two ball speeds in Brickbreaker: slow and fast. Simple eh? When the ball is moving fast, it’s much more difficult to control, so play more conservatively. When the ball is moving slowly, you can play more aggressively.

Know Your Capsules

Make sure you understand the properties of each BrickBreaker capsule. Each capsule has pros and cons. Some capsules will work well on one level but not another. I’ll go into this in more details in my BrickBreaker Level Walkthroughs.

Know How to Escape When You’re Trapped Under Bricks

Sometimes the bricks will have descended and you’ll find yourself trapped under them. Make sure you read my instructions on how to get yourself out of this situation. You need to know this if you’re going to get a decent high score, because there’s always some situation where you get trapped like this.

    Hi, Pierre!!

    Finalmente consegui.
    Tenho 247 vidas, 990.000 pontos em 56 x level 34.

Minha dúvida: se precisar trocar a bateria do meu BlackBerry esse números serão perdidos?

      Congratulations Ednei!

If you take out your battery, you will lose your score 🙁

Take a picture of your screen and send it to me — I will post it on the leaderboard! https://www.brickbreakerguide.com/unofficial-leaderboard/

I am well on my way to the million-point mark, and as much as I’ve played, I can’t figure out what the tiny flashing white icon is that comes on periodically, maybe only once or twice per round. Do you know what this is? thanks – Jason

      Pay attention
This flashing icon is maybe a sign before your mobile switch off and then you will loose everything
Is better to get a photo of your score and send it to speed brickbreaker site of Pierre

Hi Jason I’m not sure what that is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that one.

I was at 124x score 2,04x,xxx, and 620 lives, got carried away and didn’t notice the battery died out! There gone my almost 3 months’ hard work! But I won’t give up and will get a new battery to fight again. Just want to remind those playing at high scores, do take note of the battery!

I can’t beleive this game !!! .. It is full of bugs, ball passing through the bricks, ball bouncing as it wishes, sometimes it hits the corner of the brick, sometimes it does’nt (and that’s with the exact same angle), and when I say passing through the brick, I mean it.. on level 13, the ball was speeding so fast, it went through the bricks of the bottom row of white bricks …. anyway, it’s over for me with this stupid game..

Great website! I’ve spent way too many hours playing this game with various models of Blackberries. I’ll just give my short advice and reiterate some of the points you made. Rounds 1 and 2…do NOT think about getting points….think about finishing the level and accumulating/saving lives. Avoid “flip” and “wrap”. On round 2, you might even want to let a “life” drop without taking it if you have have a “catch” because the “catch” is the most valuable commodity on some levels in round 2. Round 31 can be the easiest or the hardest. I’ve died on that level more than any other. I only play up through the end of level 2 now…I did have one game that I played up to over 1 million just to have that high score showing but it takes a lot of time and I needed to reboot my phone.

Whenever I reach 100 lives, my paddle starts to behave strangely: It just moves to the right corner uncommandedly. I then have a hard time regrabbing it (my BB has a touchpad).

The first time, I reached 100 lives at 360,000, then quickly dropped to 75 due to this behaviour. Then it went back to normal, and I reached 100 lives again at 450,000, when, nearly instantly that bug reappeared.

Is that a known bug, is it happening to anyone else?

Sometimes this game is so frustrating! Maybe after a break you will want to try again.

I have to vehemently disagree there: I find the problem is not speed but the bricks coming down right from the – and this doesn’t change past “the Turn”.

In fact, when I get past level 26 the second time round, it will kill me the third time through: If I drop the ball just once (which will happen, due to the extreme angle at which you have to hit it) it’s over, even if I have 20 lives left.
